Sociolinguistics sounds like linguini....

Janet Holmes is a New Zealander who teaches upper division courses, is a language expert, is interested in gender studies, social-cultural changes in society, and in the English language as an expression of who we-you-are. Most recently, I used the book to gain clarity about the difference between a national language and an official language. If you have any interest in the English Only movement, this book is for you. How can you fight EO? By learning about what it means to have a national and official language. Enjoy this book. Knowledge is power. An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (Learning about Language)If you want to look deeper at forces behind language use and disuse, this is a book for you. Invaluable, and now that I have reading investment in the book, I feel it is an invaluable resource. It can be read by anyone. It is a pleasure to read about the social implications of languages, and get a glimpse of languages from the views and perspectives of the real users, you-me.

good intro

janet holmes does a fine job introducing sociolinguistics. i feel she takes a good mix from all over the world and synthesizes the result. i do feel that her arguments about gender and the english language are clearly activist-based. and i have never bought the african american vernacular english (aave) argument ~ although many notable sociolinguists accept it. i have worked with too many african americans to blanket categorize their language into one kettle.

i would recommend this book if you need to read for school or personal education.

About the Author
Francesco M. Angelici, PhD,�currently works in the areas of: Biology, behavioral ecology, fauna, zoogeography, and mammal systematic and conservation studies, particularly concerning carnivores, lagomorphs and ungulates. His other fields of research are: ornithology (the biology and ecology of Falconiformes, Passeriformes and Strigiformes) and herpetology (the ecology of snakes and their trophic relationship with mammals). He studies Italian and tropical fauna, with particular reference to the conservation of vertebrates. He also works in the areas of planning and environmental conservation. In particular, he has worked in the area of wildlife management at national parks, reserves and other protected areas in Italy and abroad. He currently works as a zoologist conservationist, with hunting management agencies. He is also a specialist in African savannah environments as well as desert and tropical rain forests.

About the Author

Catherine LaBerta is a Full Professor in the Computer Science/Mathematics Department at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.� She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY-Buffalo.� Catherine teaches courses that range from Intro to Computers to Programming in C++ to Web Development.� Originally a math major, Catherine took additional courses in computers and programming and found a field that clicked for her.� She enjoys the constant changes in the computer and related fields as it forces one to keep up and constantly learn.� Not a total book worm, she loves skiing in Purgatory, CO, one of her favorite spots. Book is too overwhelming for starters, MyITLab is a joke

I am a computer professional with over 15 years of experience, and I have reviewed this book for a college class...Catherine goes into detail from the specifics of how a computer works to how technology affects your daily life. Which is a good start for someone who's taking an introductory class that has no experience in computer or whatsoever. However, I feel like she tends to write too much to get to a specific point. I should note that the "bold-ed vocabulary" on each chapter is ridiculously too much. In my opinion, this book CAN be overwhelming for students.

I would rate 3/5 - 2.5/5 stars for the book.

I rated one star on Amazon NOT on the basis of the book, however on the basis of the supplied MyITLab on it. For those don't know, MyITLab is Pearson Education's online module for you to submit assignments...read e-books...and finally testing on book materials.

Now I don't know who made this website, but MyITLab ONLY supports Internet Explorer, which is a pretty disappointing factor. The registration code I was supplied did not enable me to access the e-book despite that I have the physical copy. (Most online modules let you have an e-book and a physical version).

The most important point though, is the automated markings conducted by the online module. Most multiple choice questions (randomly generated from a data bank) have either 2 answers to it or no answers to it at all. They basically force you to choose one and bet your marks against it. I don't know who came up with these, but you can't be serious! I did the multiple choices myself and could only get 70-80%, and I was told the class average was around 50% or below. 70% students were pretty rare. Some questions had confusing wording and I couldn't even understand what the question had asked.

If any instructors want to use this book, go ahead, but PLEASE, do NOT use MyITLab as a source of assignment submission and testing. Create your own questions based on topics in the book.

College students!!!! BEWARE!!!!!

If you do not buy this book at your local campus book store, you will not get the course ID for MYITLab, where you will more than likely suffer the terrible horrors MYITlab. If you do not know what MYITLab is, you are the lucky one, if you are taking a "hybrid/online" class that uses MYITLab. i suggest not and save yourself. And there is a code to sign up onto this myitlab, if you buy this used you do not get the code and must pay 80$ to obtain it. Again i, a college student, do not recommend this. The course of action i do recommend is gather your fellow classmates and write angry letters to your teachers about how much myitlab sucks.

Good book for the introductory computer class

Fourteen chapters, 11th edition, covering everything from input output storage to enterprise computing.
I like the layout of the chapters, the exercises in the end of the chapters. The team projects are
really informative.

The only piece missing is people in the business, such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

Watch his YouTube video instead - Is FREE, short and to the point.

Very simple. DO NOT buy this book. Instead watch his FREE video on YouTube. Gives you the same ideas of this book and you only spend about 15 min watching that video. In this book, he goes about describing how he learn 5 or 6 different things he was interested in. In the YouTube video, he tells you the tools you need to learn anything in 20hrs or less and again in about 15min of watching.

Okay, not great

I guess this book may have been the result of Kaufman applying his skill acquisition methods to writing!

All snark aside, this book fell short of what I expected. The first part of the book goes over the theory of skill acquisition that he has researched. It's very short, which is unfortunate, as he does a good job of putting things together in a nice arc. But the section is so short that it feels like a top ten list rather than an actual fleshed out theory.

Then the majority of the book is taken up by rather lengthy descriptions of how he went about learning a few different skills. I found this section too focused on the particulars of each skill; and there was little to no explicit mention of how he actually applied his theory to learning new skills. I can see how some elements were in play, but it would have been nice to see more in depth analysis of how each point on his checklists matters, rather than 20 stick figure drawings of yoga poses. It's to bad, I really wanted to like this book, and many of the skills Kaufman pursues are interests of mine, but a lot of the passages just seem to be edited versions of his personal learning journal of what yoga poses or ruby commands worked, rather than an analysis of how learning skills is itself a skill.

In short, don't get burned like me, wait for this one to go on sale, get it at the library, or just watch his YouTube videos and read his blog.

Fundamentals

I'll make it quick. Read Chapters 1-3 and you are basically done. Teaches you what you need.
Chapter 6 skip through it and read Interference and Consolidation.
Chapter 7 read the Inversion example and portion on behaviour fixing.
The rest of the book are just examples. If you want to read the examples they will serve as examples of deconstructing but you can just go to the end of the example chapters and read the review portion which clearly lists how he deconstructed the skill.

Follow this and you will will end up finishing fast and be able to start your next project.

I'm still on this subject. I will re-read 4 Hour Chef. The book is based on Meta Learning at the 10k rule. After that Solomon's book. All 3 books have lots of similar patterns. This time around I'm taking serious notes.

Cool thing about this book is that you realized that all it takes is 20 hrs to be pretty good at something. ie. Chapter 6 who can type at 60wpm per min with a 2% error rate. Not me or anyone I know. This book basically teaches you that all you need is 20 hrs on 1 subject to be better at something that the people around you are not good at. With 20 hrs you are ahead of the curve. 20 hrs could be the difference between you getting a promotion or someone else. Who cares about 10k hrs of deliberate practice. 20 hrs is all you need to be better than the person next to you.

About the Author
Naomi Wood was awarded the 2012 inaugural Eccles Centre British Library Writer in Resident Award. She is the Young Patrons Ambassador at the British Library and teaches at the University of East Anglia. She lives in London. Mrs. Hemingway is her American debut.

I just want more!

After reading "The Paris Wife," it lead me to wanting more on the twisted life of Hemingway. Naomi Wood does a nice job of briefly covering each wife and their time with Mr. Hemmingway. I would not say that it goes into great depth as to what these wives truly experienced while they were with him, but enough to get an idea. Since "The Paris Wife" had only covered one wife, I wanted to know more about the others that came after Hadley. As sick as it may be, I wanted to see Pfeif hurt, as well as Hemingway heartbroken when Martha said she was done(even though it was probably only for about an hour). Nothing ventured nothing gained

This is the first book I have read by this author and I went into it blindly not knowing what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised and I am so glad that I took a chance and bought this book. It was a great story and had great surprising twists to it which I really enjoyed. I really, really liked this book and I highly recommend it. I cannot wait to read more by this author. So take a chance and enjoy the ride of the fabulous story of Marc and Brendan.

Hallelujah

We finally have another writer that talks dirty during sex. Somebody slap me. Sex and talking dirty..who'd have thought it's a winning combo when the vast majority m/m stories all have sexually-non-vocal-mutes. You can always tell the sex-savvy writers from the duds in the sack. On one-hand (that's generous) I can count the writers that can TALK a good dirty game..Darien Cox now one of them.

This is not epic-worthy-Pulitzer-porn material..you have to understand some of us are so weary and parched in this genre..we could get drunk on condensation at this point.

Sweet-spot sex and characters, a little action, pleasing plot...it was a fun read.

Loved it!!!

I loved this book! I just finished it and I want so badly to start it over because I don't want to leave these guys. They were both so hot and you couldn't help but fall in love with them and feel the emotional ups and downs they went through. It had some very unexpected twists, one in particular that had me saying "Wow" out loud.

As one reviewer already said, I loved Brendan's Mom...she was quite the character. Can't say I felt that way about his Dad.

I just wish I had read it during the weekend because I didn't want to put it down; unfortunately, my job got in the way. I kept wanting to take breaks at work to read more of it.

Take a chance and read it. I hope you love it as much as I did.

About the Author

Beno�t Gomis is an international security analyst focusing on terrorism and organized crime. Great heist story with all the best parts of Cowboy Bebop

This is my favorite Black Ocean book so far. It's a solid heist story with a definite Cowboy Bebop vibe going on. Fast ships, fast women, blackmail, double-crosses, all set against the backdrop of the Black Ocean universe and the weirdos of the Mobius.

If you haven't been keeping up with the Black Ocean series it might be a little confusing, this book references some stuff that happened in previous books. what are you waiting for, go read the rest of them ;)

The only part that kinda bugged me was one part where a pilot is looking at his spacecraft and makes a joke about being completely stymied what any of the machinery is or how it works. It was kinda jarring because I read a lot of pilot memoires and they know every nut and bolt of their aircraft. Hopefully JS Morin brushes up on aviation history and military fiction before diving into Carl's naval background in future books.

Put up or shut up, Carl!

Another great adventure with the crew of the Mobius! Carl just can't seem to stay out of trouble; no matter what he's doing he has to find some way to scam someone out of something. Reminds me of Han Solo with his "It's not my fault!" line. Every new mission gives insight into the background of a crew member or two and this one is no exception. Captain Carl is front and center and his creativity in planning missions for his crew is in rare form. Without giving anything away, this mission includes: an old friend, a new friend, an old customer, several people who would like Carl to disappear, starship racing, a sober Roddy, playtime for Kubu, threats, subterfuge, lies.... and so much more! You get the idea. Give it a read! You won't be disapointed! Would I lie to you? Trust me!

A good ol' space crime

Think of it like an alternate version of firefly, complete with ship mascot! Since it's book 5 in the series I don't have much of a convincing review to write(you should already be hooked). If you need a reason to pick it up, the mascot Kubu; a sentient dog like creature withthe intelligence of a toddler; is a pretty good character to get behind and giggle with. He's my favorite. There's a bit more wizardry in this one, lot's of scheming on how to rig a race/stealthe racer.

TL:dr - Firefly+Pod Racing+crime schemes=Awesome read!
