About the Author
As both an astronomer and a software developer, Dr. Albert Conrad has developed and used software systems for all phases of observing:� from planning the observation, to taking the data, to analyzing the data in preparation for publication.� Dr. Conrad’s research interests include asteroid systems and developing novel techniques to study comets, planets, and the moons of planets, in particular Jupiter’s moon Io.� His complete bibliography includes nearly 100 publications including 24 articles in refereed journals.� These range from his early software designs for the Keck Observatory to his discovery of a small moon orbiting the asteroid 41 Daphne.� He enjoys sharing the results of his research through public lectures and classroom visits.
�
Dr. Conrad received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1994.� He then worked as software engineer and support astronomer at both Lick and Keck Observatories before moving to the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy to lead the development of a next generation adaptive optics system.� He enjoys cycling, running, and outrigger canoe paddling.

If you are interested in astronomy software, read this book!

Software Systems for Astronomy is a very short textbook. It covers many aspects of astronomy software at the level needed by a working professional in the field. If you are interested in astronomy software, read this book. If you want to develop astronomy software professionally, read it twice and do the exercises. You'll have a huge advantage over anyone who doesn't.
Full disclosure: Albert Conrad is a friend of mine. We worked at NASA Ames Research Center together before he went into astronomy and spent a lot of time sailing and hanging out. We've kept in touch since. Note: I've developed aerospace research software since 1979, but I don't have much of an astronomy background.
The book is full of very practical advice, the sort of stuff that typically isn't in textbooks, but is often earned by painful experience getting your software working to the satisfaction of a user community. My guess, this book would save a novice astronomy programmer at least a couple of years worth of mistakes and a few very unhappy astronomers.
The book covers observation planning software, choice of languages, data and data archives, control systems (particularly adaptive optics) and a bit more. There are some areas missing I'd like to see addressed:
1. Software for space telescopes. This book is entirely devoted to ground systems.
2. Software for discovering asteroids and other moving objects. This is very important for planetary defense and asteroid mining, areas I've done some work in, but is missing from this book.
3. Archival software. I've done a little work looking through star data bases looking for very advanced civilizations. While that particular application is a little out there, building useful data bases of space objects is an important activity left out.
4. A more extensive discussion of data analysis techniques. There is a little of that in here.
I'm guessing that these aren't covered because the author hasn't had much personal experience developing such software. Much of the reason this book is so good is that he knows exactly whereof he speaks. So, I'd like to see a second addition with some co-authors who have the relevant experience.
There is one footnote I can't let go: the author claims Java development is a bit slower than C/C++ development. Having spent half my career writing mostly C/C++ and the other half using Java, I'd estimate I'm 2-3x faster using Java because memory management is easier, the compiler and run-time catch a lot more bugs, there's no redundant .h/.c code, and the language is much cleaner (C++ template syntax is a nightmare). It does, of course, depend on what sort of software one is developing. I write mostly scientific applications and simulations.
To end where I started, since you've displayed interest in astronomy software by reading this entire review, get this book and use it. You'll be glad you did.

Good for young researchers

This is a book, I used during Summer School for Astronomers, especially PhD students. I found it very helpful and interesting. Good for young researchers, who want to learn about observations, processing the data. There are crucial information and facts concerning observations, observing techniques and data formats. I really liked the school and the book.
