Forced Impressions, by Piper Doone

Jonah Landers’s promotion to detective isn’t going so well. His first undercover operation is a disaster thanks to Rafael Santos, a Cuban-American detective so far undercover, no one on Rafael’s Miami-based squad even had a clue he’d already infiltrated the prostitution ring Jonah was targeting. Two years and an insane twist of fate later, Jonah finds himself transferred from Orlando and partnered up with Rafael in Miami—and their rocky beginning doesn’t get any better.

For the sake of their careers and because he realizes he’s falling for Rafael, Jonah makes every attempt to smooth things over and move on with his love life. He turns his attention to A.J. Choya, a Seminole Indian who runs the tech department. But there’s no spark between them, and Jonah has to admit his feelings for Rafael aren’t going away.

When a new case falls into Rafael's and Jonah’s laps, they must go undercover again and become intimate in a way that forces them to confront their feelings for each other—no matter the consequences.

Good!!
By Amber818
Ok, I will be the first to admit I’m so surprised about how much I enjoyed this book. I’m not surprised because the writing is bad, because it’s so NOT bad. I’m not surprised because the story is crap, because it’s not crap. This has a solid plot, interesting characters, and an enjoyable storyline. I’m surprised for the most superficial reason and that’s because the sex between the main characters doesn’t happen until like 70% in the book. And usually that’s a game changer for me but with this story little things were thrown in that gave me just enough of the passion and lust I usually need pretty early on in my stories.

Jonah Lander’s is a Police Detective that’s had a pretty rough transition after his promotion. So much so that he decides a transfer of departments is in order. He knows he needs a big change and fast. Settling in at his new department he isn’t prepared to be partnered with a cop that he had a bumpy first run-in with a few years before.

Rafael Santos doesn’t think much of his new partner. All he really knows is he doesn’t want or need him. Butting heads at every step of the way both men are unprepared for the attraction that arises between them.

Like I mentioned earlier we wait AWHILE for these men to come together. The story however moved at a steady pace and I really enjoyed that the police cases weren’t long and drawn out. Also, when the characters do finally get it on they are smokin’ hot together. Like on fire…HOT!! This is one of those stories where the passion builds and builds then there’s an uncontrollable and crazy passionate coming together.

This is a new to me author and I would definitely read more of her stories. Great writing, awesome characters and a thought-out storyline…I’d absolutely recommend this one!!!!

Fun, But Predictable
By Alan Arthur Katz
3.5 Stars

“Forced Impressions” is a fun book to read. Piper Doone does a good job. Her writing is lucid, often elegant and always well-paced. Her characters are believable and engaging, locations vivid and she’s effectively captured the feel of South Florida.

This is the story of two cops. Jonah is an extremely white (he can’t go out in the Florida sun without virtually impervious sunscreen), beautiful young man with a passion for law enforcement, but who’s perhaps not quite cynical enough to be a really good detective. The other cop is Rafael, a child of Cuban immigrants with many more years and infinitely more experience under his belt in capturing and putting away the bad guys. He’s a better cop, but no one would mistake him for a good guy. They meet in the most unfortunate way, both undercover in a human-trafficking investigation, but neither knowing the other was a cop. Talk about “meet-cute”! These characters meet with Rafael – in character - punching Jonah’s lights out.

Two years later, Jonah has transferred from Orlando to Miami-Dade and he’s partnered with (guess who?) his nemesis, the same Hispanic cop who decked him two years earlier. Both immediately want a new partner, but a wise captain keeps them together, telling them to grow up and live with it.

I’m sure you know exactly where this is going, as any reader would just a chapter or two into “Forced Impressions’. And that’s the reason I didn’t give this well-written book more stars – the book is totally predictable. There are no surprises here.

But it is fun to watch the seasoned detective soften around the edges, with occasional grudging praise, and he even lets Jonah drive the car – once. He also gets insanely jealous when Jonah dates a gorgeous openly-gay Native American police IT genius. The only one who fails to notice, of course, is Jonah.

As I mentioned, this is a fun read. I read it in a single sitting and did so with a smile on my face. Now, if it were only a bit less predictable, a little less derivative, a little less reminiscent of a hundred other “cops in love” gay romances I’ve read over the last few years, the author’s talent and writing might have led me to give “Forced Impressions” a higher rating.

If you’re looking for a light, fun read, with engaging characters, and don’t mind the lack of surprises, you can do a lot worse than “Forced Impressions”. If you’re looking for something groundbreaking, deep or inventive, this is probably not the book for you.

I do look forward to where ever Piper Doone goes next. Add a little substance, and the author could be a top gay romance writer.

tough cops with a golden heart...
By cinnamon
I’ve read this book in one sitting and enjoyed the heck out of it. I’ve always loved detective stories and having two hot cops as main characters is a major turn on for me. It’s a very well written story, full of fun and witty banter, enough actions to keep it interesting and exciting, meanwhile building the best kind of tension between our MCs. This is the perfect read for you if you like crime stories, tough cops with a golden heart, a slow build-up, great chemistry and a witty, flowing writing style.
The story is told from Jonah Landers’ third person point of view, so we get to know him pretty well. His character is fun, chatty and very hard-working. He starts a new job being partnered with Rafael Santos, a seasoned detective he had previously had an unpleasant job-related run-in with. They are attracted to each other from the first moment but it’s only us readers who recognize that. Both men live their lives on the job, getting used to working together, solving all kinds of crimes in the Miami area, but they do not recognize the chemistry that exists between them. The tension is building from page to page, chapter to chapter until an undercover operation causes an explosive scene which no longer allows them to ignore their feelings. I would have loved to read Rafael’s pov as well. I feel that I don’t know him as much as I’d love to. I miss his side of the story, some information about his past, his motivation, or his feelings. The chemistry between Rafael and Jonah is amazing at times. They have great scenes together, but some sex scenes were just a bit too complicated for me. They might have their purpose, but it was often confusing how a sex scene turned from sizzling hot to a little awkward then it just lost the chemistry for me at times. I still had a great time reading it and you will too. Give it a go!
