A remarkably simple and subtle piece of work

First I want to say: I LOVE HAVING THIS IN PAPER! I'm getting more and more accustomed to the electronic formats but sometimes (like in the heat of battle) there is NO substitute for paper!

Now on to the main review: The writers repeatedly emphasized that they didn't want to create a wargame. Well, they've succeeded. The title says it all; this book is about how to integrate your characters (and it is reasonably system agnostic) into mass combat without breaking a sweat.

The book has a lot of nice simple extras about how to raise an army, the value of combined arms, the value and cost of specialty units, some nice simple nods to air, space, and land combat (although space is very weak and would need to be filled out somewhat).

There's also some simple but historically accurate rules on how to conduct a military campaign, take casualties, integrate PC and NPC decisions into combat, and start and end a battle.

But one notes that with just a FEW tweaks and additions this could become a Generic Universal Wargame System. I'm not arguing in favor of the concept, just noting that it could be done.

So this is the book for your GM if he/she wants to run a Dr. Who game with a few squads on each side; it is also the book for your GM if they want to run a much more detailed military-oriented campaign (such as Weird War II). It could even be the book for your GM if they want to go whole hog and run a wargame with personal leaders.

Overall this is an amazing accomplishment for a book that is barely 50 pages long.

This is a delightful book if you are looking a way of integrating large scale combat with low and mid-range level characters. The example of combat in the book reflects this campaign target.
